Xbox Reportedly Going All-Digital With Next-Gen Console 'Project Helix'

Microsoft's next-generation Xbox console, internally codenamed Project Helix, will be a fully digital device that lacks a disc drive entirely, according to sources familiar with the company's plans.

The move marks a decisive break from physical media for Microsoft's gaming division and follows a similar strategy adopted by Sony with the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition. However, unlike Sony's approach of offering both disc and discless variants, Microsoft is said to be committing to an all-digital future across the entire next-generation lineup.

"The data is clear: over 85% of Xbox game transactions are already digital," said a former Xbox executive who spoke on condition of anonymity. "Physical disc sales have been declining year over year, and maintaining a disc drive adds cost and complexity to the hardware."

Project Helix is expected to launch in late 2027 with a custom AMD processor based on the Zen 6 architecture and RDNA 5 graphics. The console is rumored to target 4K gaming at 120 frames per second as a baseline, with support for 8K upscaling via machine learning.

Microsoft is also developing a new cloud-native feature that would allow Game Pass subscribers to stream any game in their library without downloading, even if they own the title digitally. This would represent a significant expansion of Xbox Cloud Gaming's capabilities.

The all-digital strategy has drawn mixed reactions from the gaming community. While many players have already transitioned to digital libraries, physical media advocates point to concerns about game preservation and the inability to resell or lend games.
